Single mom Emily Locke is building a new life with her daughter. Hoping to spend more time at home, she's put her career on hold to work part time for her private investigator friend, Richard Cole. It's a nice balance between work and family until Emily finds out she's been working for the attorney that defended her husband's killer.

The discovery nearly destroys her friendship with Richard, but Emily resists abandoning his client, the socialite Carissa Gaston, who awaits trial for the murder of a local plastic surgeon. The threat of losing her children to a self serving ex husband terrifies Carissa more than the thought of a life behind bars. Sympathetic to a mother's fears and unconvinced of Carissa's guilt, Emily resolves to stick with the case despite her growing concerns about Richard and the dubious attorney who hired him.

A mysterious note leads her into a daring undercover ruse at a highbrow ladies health club. Impervious to fashion trends and uninterested in beauty treatments, Emily fakes conformity with Houston's elite debutantes and trophy wives in a surreal fitness subculture where things, and people, are seldom what they seem. At this gym, "killer workout" has a whole new meaning.

I was baffled by the high ratings this book received because I didn't find it that good. There were a lot of holes and inconsistencies in the plot. First inconsistency: Claire asked Emily if she had kids. Emily didn't want to tell her about Annette. Then later on in the book, Claire said she had read about Emily and Annette in the newspaper. Supposedly their story was all over the news. Second one: the hot-shot investigators of Richard and Emily didn't even know that Wendell Platt and Chris King were partners in the plastic surgery practice. That would have been so easy to figure out! Drive by the medical office and look at the name on the door! Then over-sexed Jeannine drove me crazy because she hung around the whole time instead of going home to Cleveland. But ironically, in some instances, she was a better detective than Emily. So I was not all that impressed by Emily herself as a detective when she had to have her bimbo friend help her out. I'm sorry that I spent money on this book.

Dead Lift An Emily Locke Mystery Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Brady Carrington MacDuffie Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

In the second--and perhaps final?--installment of the Emily Locke mystery series from Rachel Brady, Dead Lift, Emily Locke returned to solve another gripping mystery. For Emily, she tried to build a new life as a single mom to Annette, while she placed her career on hold as a private investigator. But she'd gotten embroiled into a case, when a plastic surgeon was found killed and her client was arrested in prison. It was up to Emily to discover who was the murder and link it to an elderly abuse scam case as well. The closer she'd gotten to the truth, the more endangered she placed herself into harm's way for her and her daughter.
After Rachel Brady's inside look into the world of skydiving, I was curious to see what she had to show us about high end fitness club culture . . . and I wasn't disappointed! I've been around enough gyms in my day to have seen so many of the character archetypes that I had to laugh, even though my own gym IS the gritty YMCA that gets mentioned more than once here. Still, I've been cropdusted by enough clouds of perfume at my YMCA to know exactly what Rachel is describing in many of the characters our bold protagonist rubs shoulders with in this novel. While it is about fashion and not health clubs, I was particularly put in mind of the movie THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE, going so far as to picture one of the main suspects of the book -- fitness club owner Diana King -- as Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Main character Emily Locke is a bit more together in this book, not constantly on the brink of breakdown as she often was in her first novel. While she still has her moments (is this woman ever going to realize that a good tumble in the sack is EXACTLY what she needs?!), she is made of sterner stuff throughout this book. She's even downright bitchy at times, most of the time even when it's necessary to be!

As for the mystery itself, I think I enjoyed it more than I did Rachel's previous novel, FINAL APPROACH. It is less "romancey" and I like that, even though I know that I'm not exactly the demographic Rachel is going for. Still, the elements of the book outside my bulls-eye aren't off-putting at all and don't distract from a tight, well-plotted little story. It was nice spending time with Emily and her crew again. Can't wait for the next one.

Oh, and does Emily finally get laid? You'll have to read it and see for yourself....
Emily Locke, after losing her husband, rescued her infant daughter who had been taken from her and sold to a couple who thought the purchase was legal (see Final Approach). She and her child move to Houston where she works as an assistant to her private investigative friend Richard Cole. Their client, wealthy society lady Claire Gaston, is charged with the death of Dr. Wendell Platt, who was murdered in his home and her fingerprints are everywhere including on the murder weapon. She swears that she never met the victim nor knows where her missing current husband Daniel is after they had quite a public brawl.

Emily believes their client is innocent because her first concern is for her children who she fears her first husband will take them home with him to Argentina. During the conversation, she learns that the lawyer Richard works for defended the group that kidnapped her daughter. Despite everything Emily remains on the investigation, which leads her to Diana King. Claire believes she framed her because she had an affair with her husband. After sleuthing, not always legally, Emily concludes they are looking in the wrong direction; she changes direction and soon thinks another murder is connected to Platt's. She soon becomes the recipient of threatening emails and an attempt on her life.

The second Emily Locke private investigative thriller hits the heroine in the gut when she learns who their client is and in the heart when she learns who Claire's concerns are for. It is for latter, as much as for her own needs that Emily goes beyond stretching legality by breaking the law. The rest of the cast is solid especially still sassy smack the butt BFF Jeannie.

My first mystery in months and it was a good one. I was won over by the Houston setting.

Not sure how well it connected to the first book in the series, but it was a good stand alone mystery.
While certainly a strong character in her own right, Emily Locke isn't the heart and soul of this second installment of this ongoing mystery series it's Jeannie, her best friend and world renowned shopper. Whereas Emily may toss outfits together like she's getting dressed in the dark, Jeannie spends more time at spas, and being pampered like each day might be the last one she has left. And it's Jeannie's good looks and perfected outfit combinations that help them waltz through the doors of an exclusive health club.

While the mystery proves intriguing on its own, it's the characters that really help the prose sing, with the mother-daughter relationship giving this story more warmth than a down-filled fuzzy blanket. If you want more than a little heart with your mystery, you should pick up this tale without delay.
